Explore the underground natural heritage of Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The cave is entirely natural and still active. The geology of the terrain dates back more than 25 million years, from the end of the Tertiary era, then an underground river dug a beautiful gallery that continues to adorn itself with an infinity of stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, columns and other calcite concretions.
Discovery
The Lastournelle Cave was discovered in 1878 by farmers who were digging a well to find water. They did not find water but an underground wonder. It is a family cave. The grandfather of the current owner discovered the entrance and made the arrangements and opened it to the public in 1957. The Lastournelle Cave has therefore been an extraordinary family heritage for three generations.
