Take a road trip in the Pays du Dropt to admire its medieval heritage

On the roads of the Pays du Dropt, you will have the opportunity to cross charming villages, to stroll through the narrow streets of medieval bastides, to admire the architecture of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France". Here is our selection of villages not to be missed during your road trip in the Pays du Dropt :

  • Monflanquin is a good starting point for entering this "country of bastides." It is one of the " Most Beautiful Villages of France." Its medieval streets will lead you to the Maison du Prince Noir, the market hall, and many other interesting monuments. We therefore suggest you start your visit with the Bastide Museum. It allows you to better understand the function of the bastides, their architecture, and life in these fortified towns in the Middle Ages.
  • In Villeréal, you will be impressed by its fortified church, with its two towers. While strolling through the fortified town, you will also appreciate its wooden market hall and its half-timbered houses.
  • Castillonnès is a rich town, with many points of interest : abbey, central square, History and Heritage Museum... To get off the beaten track, stop at the Chocolate Museum at the Chocolaterie Rody. This museum awakens all your senses to help you discover this delicacy in all its facets. On site, a workshop will introduce you to making your own chocolate bar!
  • Lauzun is an ancient ducal city. The Renaissance-style castle is a marvel, worth seeing and visiting. More unusual, in Lauzun you will find an astonishing exhibition on the history of costume, nestled in a sheepfold.
  • Miramont-de-Guyenne is a former royal fortified town. Although it has evolved over time, it has still retained its original structure. It is a bright and lively town.
  • Allemans-du-Dropt is crossed by the Dropt. It is a refreshing village, very popular during the summer, but its heritage is also interesting: 10th century church, market hall, dovecote, wash house, mill...
  • Loubès-Bernac is a charming country village, which comes alive during the summer with traditional and authentic festivals.
  • Duras is one of the must-sees. Its castle reveals a part of life in the 17th century, by opening its basements... You enter behind the scenes of its history! Don't forget to take a little break to taste the wines of Duras (in moderation, of course).
  • This is the end of our road trip and a return to Monflanquin, with a final stop at the medieval village of Cancon. Its surrounding wall and round tower are remarkable. Cancon is also called the “ Hazelnut Capital”. You will visit the Maison de la Noisette with its museum, its shop and a free tasting.

To get the kids involved, Terra Aventura Nouvelle Aquitaine takes you on a journey to the Pays du Dropt in a different way!

Explore the paths of the Pays du Dropt, on foot or by bike

We promised you nature activities in the Dropt… Because exploring the country roads isn't just about driving! This country is ideal for hiking and cycling.

The Grande Randonnée Trails guide you along the famous " Paths of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle " through the Pays du Dropt. From north to south, you can join the GR64 at Castillonnès, all the way to Cancon. This is a great way to enjoy the very natural environment of this area. Along the GR636, you go from Castillonnès eastwards to Lacapelle-Biron, passing through Monflanquin, Gavaudun Castle and Biron Castle.

There are many other hiking trails that will take you through the bastides, the most beautiful villages in France, and the Dropt countryside. There are beautiful walks to be had in the wine-growing hillsides, meadows, and forests. You will find many routes on the Duras tourist office website and on the Pays de Lauzun website.

If you're more of a cyclist, the Dropt Valley Cycle Route runs through it from Duras to Fumel. 97 km of beautiful roads are at your disposal, allowing you to follow the river called "the Dropt." You can also connect to the Lot Valley Cycle Route on one side or the Canal des Deux Mers on the other.

Consult the route and practical details on the Véloroute et Voies vertes website.

To change your mount, the IGN Rando website presents an interactive map of equestrian hiking trails. Consult our section on equestrian centers to find your guide and the mount that suits you. Beautiful horseback or pony rides await you there.

Take the Bergerac-Duras wine route

To discover this unique wine-growing region between the hillsides of Duras and the Bergerac region, we recommend taking the Bergerac-Duras Wine Route . As you visit the wineries, you can learn about wine tourism. Here are our top picks:

  • Domaine Amblard is a family story of passionate winegrowers who love their terroir, since 1938. Tours of the estate are regularly organized. In a friendly atmosphere, your guides will humorously introduce you to their Désir'Osé, Cœur'Osé, Sup'Osé, etc.
  • Château Molhière is located in the heart of a very ancient Côtes de Duras vineyard. This 16th century property and its traditional barrel cellar are well worth a visit. The owners have successfully combined tradition and technology to sustain their business and ensure the future of this estate.
  • Domaine de Durand produces organic wines, which have received numerous awards. To see the estate from a different perspective, they also conduct hot air balloon flights.

Discover the wines of Bergerac-Duras here or on site, visit the Maison des Vins de Duras.

The Pays de Dropt welcomes all kinds of nature, sporting and cultural activities...

Between Castillonnès and Cancon, you can relax by the water at Lake Lougratte. On site, you can fish, play sports on the grounds, let the children play in the playground, stroll around the village and the surrounding area, swim and enjoy its leisure center during the summer. In short, you won't be bored in Lougratte and its lake.

Near Duras, you can get some height and admire the Pays du Dropt from the treetops of the Des-chênes-toi Aventure treetop adventure park. 18 courses, including 2 zip lines, and 200 workshops, await you for a great time with the family, as the park is accessible from the age of 3 !

Of course, the land of fortified towns contains many treasures and castles to protect them...

  • To step back in time, Gavaudun Castle is a witness to history and the Hundred Years' War. From the top of this keep, perched on its rocky spur, you will have a breathtaking panorama and you will feel the harshness of this troubled era.
  • The Bonaguil Fortress is an impressive medieval castle. It comes alive during school and summer holidays, allowing you to immerse yourself in the medieval world.
  • Take a step back in time at the Château de Lauzun to admire the splendors of the Renaissance. This residence has the appearance of a palace and provides an exceptional setting for exhibitions and events.
  • Finally, at the Château de Duras, you will appreciate castle life in the 17th century, with its furnished interiors and basements reserved for servants.
