Tournon-d'Agenais, a royal bastide!

Tournon-d'Agenais was founded in 1270 by Raymond VII (the Count of Toulouse), a major sponsor of bastides in the region (also at the origin of Cordes-sur-Ciel, Puymirol, Castelnau-de-Montmiral, etc.) . It is a small bastide, but has everything of a large one: streets built around a central square with arcades, a very parallel and perpendicular orthonormal plan and a charter of customs (which governs collective life and commerce in the bastide at its creation, attesting to its official creation as a new town) …

The bastide being high up, if you park at the bottom, you will have to start by going up. There are several paths to get there, including a staircase of more than 200 steps. Each entrance to the city had its own gate. The main door is still in place. On the main square, several elements which bear witness to the statue of the bastide of Tournon-d'Agenais: its arcades with covered areas so that trade is effective all year round, on site a market hall, the town hall and a well.

The walk will not be long, but pleasant. In the summer, there is a little more life, but on a beautiful autumn or winter day it is still very pleasant! A few craftsmen still occupy the old shops, these business houses with a storefront. There are some pretty houses in the village, with corbels and half-timbering filled with cob or more recent materials.

Walk to the public garden, there is an orientation table with a clear view to enjoy the panorama. Continue by walking around the city, along the ramparts, then you will go back down on a steep path with vegetation and pretty views on both sides of the city viewpoints.
