Located at the gates of the Dordogne and perched at the top of a hill, Monflanquin has been classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France since 1989 and Station Verte de Vacances. It is definitely a step to visit. This old country house from the 13th century founded in 1256 by Alphonse de Poitiers, passed successively into the hands of the English and the French during the 100 Years War.

This "new town" of the Middle Ages takes on the characteristics of country houses: an orthogonal plan with its cart and cross streets, half-timbered houses, its central square and its arcades. Its Gothic church, its carrerots and the House known as the "Black Prince" make its particularity. Our favorite: the market square with its arcades, ideal on market days (find them on the agenda of our site) .

A stroll through the alleys of Monflanquin will transport you to the medieval atmosphere .

In order to prepare your visit, be sure to take all the information on Le Guide du Lot-et-Garonne as well as from the Coeur de Bastides Tourist Office in Monflanquin

Good ideas from the Lot-et-Garonne Guide:

The magnificent Pujols, overlooking the Lot valley

The medieval town of Pujols is a very small village but worth the detour. Perched at an altitude of 180 meters, it is located less than ten kilometers from the bastide town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. The view from the village is breathtaking: between the red bricks of the city and the air of Provence breathed in by the landscapes of the Lot valley , you will be breathless. While strolling in the alleys of Pujols you can only be seduced by the white stone houses flowered with hydrangeas or roses and half-timbered houses. Walk along Via Podiensis , the most famous of the routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The village has retained its medieval character, thanks to the remains of the surrounding wall, the castle and the fortified gates . In the center of the city, also classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France , a covered market and two churches drew our attention: the Saint-Nicolas church and the Sainte-Foy church, decorated with 16th century wall paintings, which hosts summer exhibitions.

Our favorite of this destination: the toy house whose entry is free. Let your child's soul flourish in front of wooden toys and other games to test on the spot.

Pujols will conquer your hearts , so prepare your visit quickly thanks to all our good ideas

Good addresses in the Lot-et-Garonne Guide:

Villeréal, royal bastide

At the junction between Périgord and Le Lot-et-Garonne , halfway between Bergerac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot, the royal bastide of Villeréal was founded in 1267 by Alphonse de Poitiers, like Monflanquin. This village has an architecture typical of medieval "new towns" in the South West of France: a huge 14th-century multi-storey hall with solid oak pillars, a 13th-century fortified church, a main square with shops, and pretty alleys along which half-timbered or stone houses coexist, old-style enclosed gardens. One of the most interesting houses in our opinion is located in Saint James Street : it mixes half-timbering, cob and cut stones.

The restaurants have tempting menus with affordable menus, the shops mainly sell regional products , there are a few artisans and the farmers' markets are held every Monday evening in summer . In short, Villeréal is a step to discover without hesitation. If you want to know more, don't hesitate to read our article dedicated to this beautiful village.
